Call Of Duty Games, What If FPS Games Were Created Like Island Games

What might be wrong with Call of Duty games? Not much. Wait a second, come to think about it, there is something wrong with MW 3. Its the time frame. I can play through it quick, which sucks for a game I love so much. Now we are paying a lot of money for a game that is done in about 14 hours.

When looking at games like Skyrim, which is essentially an FPS combined with RPG, it will take you 200 hours to finish the main story lines.

And because of its Creation engine, which has a very advanced AI that gives randomness like real life to NPCs, and its free roaming capability, you will have thousands of hours of game-play waiting for you.

You do not even have to follow the quest lines, you could even kill key figures who are important for the quest. It does not matter. Because no matter where you go there is always something to do in Skyrim. The player is empowered to get what ever the player wants out of this game.

Lets be honest. FPS games like Call of Duty games are becoming shorter. With little redesign of the game engine, honestly its a bit of a cash grab. Like all products that see the light of incredible success the Modern Warfare series is more about putting the product out as quickly as you can, it was not long ago the Black OPs appeared. Success has forced the developers to think more about money before the player. How much different MW 3 is from MW 2? Not much.

Not so for Skyrim! No they care about their players. They have put out a truly innovative game building upon its predecessor: Oblivion. This was not done for Modern Warfare 3, why? I think I know why.

First off there are two kinds of games. One is an alley game, the other is an Island game. Call of Duty games are alley games. The boundaries in alley games are close, very close. In this case the player is led down a certain constrained path.

Boundaries are not immediately perceptible in Island games, and are often referred to as sandbox games, popular for RPGs. You could walk all day and not really know where one boundary begins and another one ends.

What do I mean? Games like Modern Warfare would be made like Island games that would be way more interesting, maybe a little less exciting, but would increase play time. I know that Call of Duty is all about multi-player, and or survival mode, and in that is were the hours of play time can be found.

FPS game should be made more like Island games, with random battle possibilities outside of the main alley storyline. This would empower the player more, so the player can determine the way the game will evolve. Call it a cross-genre fps. Does it have to be RPG? No, but we should be able to build on your combat skills.

But wait, do not read this the wrong way. I love MW 2 and 3, and I know that alley style games heighten the drama of the game play. FPS alley style is fun. I just think it is time to start thinking outside the box for once, before we have to fork out another 70 dollars.

Since the combat is still FPS, I like to play Skyrim. I would suggest you do get the Call of Duty games, and make sure you get Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, and 3. They are a lot of fun
